March Madness Book Competition

Bringing reading, fun, and friendly competition together!

Written by Annabelle M. and Kennedy G.

March Madness is full of excitement, surprises, and competition, but at Horizon School, it’s not just about sports. This year, we had a March Madness Book Competition! Students voted for their favorite books as they moved through a bracket, just like in basketball. This fun activity helped make reading more exciting while encouraging students to stay responsible, respectful, and kind.

How It Works

Each day, students listened to books and voted for their favorites to move on to the next round. There was even a mystery reader each day for students to guess! Students could follow along by checking the bracket displayed on the cafeteria bulletin board and making predictions about which books would win.

Who Organized the Event?

Mrs. Krueger and Mrs. Guetzke organized the Book Bracket. They also worked with Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Swanson, who helped select the books for the competition.

How Were the Books Chosen?

The team carefully chose books that students would enjoy and learn from. They looked for stories with strong lessons and books that would “spark excitement,” as Mrs. Horvat shared. They also included some new or less familiar titles to keep things interesting and help students discover new favorites.

And the Winner Is…

After many exciting rounds, the winner of the March Madness Book Competition was Don’t Trust Fish (read by Mr. Pauley)! Students loved this book because it was funny and entertaining. It was our top pick, too!

Our runner-up favorites included:

  • Can I Be Your Dog?

  • Memoirs of a Goldfish

The March Madness Book Competition was a fun way to celebrate reading and bring our school together. Students had a great time voting, predicting, and cheering for their favorite books. We hope this event continues in the future so that even more students can discover the joy of reading!
