Why Should We Keep the Pond Clean?

Written by: Clayton S., Ian A., Franco B., Teddy B., and Hayden W.

Did you know that we have a pond behind Horizon? Sadly, instead of enjoying it, some people are throwing rocks at the animals and putting trash in the water. This can harm the pond and everything living in it.

Our first reason for keeping the pond clean is that it is part of nature. Nature is already being damaged in many places, so we need to do our part to protect it. For example, you can help by not throwing rocks or trash and by cleaning up after yourself so garbage doesn’t blow into the pond. Even picking up a few pieces of trash can make a big difference and keep the pond looking beautiful.

Our second reason is to think about the animals that live in the pond. Animals can get hurt if they are hit by rocks or if they eat trash by mistake. Jane Goodall once said, “It’s not enough to love animals; we must actively protect and preserve them.” This means we all have a responsibility to keep animals safe.

Our final reason is that ponds are important habitats. They provide water and a home for many living things, such as ducks, bugs, and plants. If we take care of the pond, it will remain a healthy place full of life for everyone to enjoy.

In conclusion, the pond is an important and special place at our school, but it is being harmed by littering and unsafe behavior. We need everyone to help take care of it. Who’s with us?

Things you can do to help:

  • Throw away your trash

  • Do not throw rocks or pebbles

  • Be kind to the animals

This was such a thought-provoking read, and I'm so glad you brought up the importance of keeping our local ponds clean. It really makes you consider how interconnected everything is. I’ve been doing a bit of research myself on similar conservation efforts, and your post fills in so many of the gaps I had. I particularly resonate with your points about the ripple effects of pollution; it’s not just about the water itself, but all the life it supports. For instance, I remember seeing a documentary about a stream near my childhood home that had become choked with debris, and the impact on the local bird population was devastating https://www.bpay.com.au/faqs It really hammered home how vital these seemingly small ecosystems…
