Is indoor or outdoor recess better? That is a big question for many 5th graders! We surveyed 154 students to find out what they think, and the results were very close.
Survey Results
Outdoor recess was the winner with 82 votes (53.2%). Indoor recess was close behind with 72 votes (46.8%). Even though outdoor recess won, many students shared strong reasons for liking both options.
Why Students Like Indoor Recess
Some students prefer indoor recess, especially during colder months. They like staying warm and dry while still having fun.
Here’s what students said:
“Because I can play games and not be outside in the cold.”
“I like indoor better because I stay warm and don’t get wet or muddy.”
“I don’t like putting on all the winter gear.”
What Students Do Indoors
Play games like charades or Pictionary
Draw or do crafts
Play games with friends
Why Students Like Outdoor Recess
Other students enjoy being outside where they can move around and get fresh air.
Here’s what students said:
“I get to play and interact with my friends.”
“I like getting fresh air and playing with kids from other classes.”
“It’s fun to run around and burn energy.”
What Students Do Outside
Play tag
Run and play games
Explore and be active
Even though outdoor recess won the vote, both indoor and outdoor recess have their benefits. Since the weather can change quickly, it’s great that students get to enjoy both options. No matter where recess takes place, the most important thing is having fun and spending time with friends!
