A Legacy of Learning: Celebrating Mrs. Swenson

Written by Srithik G., Kenzie K., Amelia B., and Austin G.

Have you ever had a teacher who makes learning exciting and pushes you to do your best? That is exactly the kind of teacher Mrs. Swenson is! Mrs. Swenson has been teaching for 19 years, spending most of that time working with 5th graders in math, science, and social studies. She brings energy, passion, and care into everything she does. Math is her favorite subject, and it shows in the way she supports her students and helps them grow into confident mathematicians.

How Did She Become a Teacher?

Mrs. Swenson didn’t always plan to be a teacher. She first worked as an architect, but everything changed when she took a summer job at the YMCA as a sports camp counselor. That experience helped her realize she loved working with kids, which led her to teaching.

Why Did She Start iRun?

Mrs. Swenson always wanted to be a high school track coach, but the schedule didn’t match her teaching day. Instead, she started iRun, a running club at Horizon. Her goal was to get students, especially girls, excited about running and to help build their confidence. She also loves that running is a “lifetime sport” that people can enjoy for the rest of their lives.

What Does She Like to Do Outside of School?

Mrs. Swenson enjoys being active outdoors. She loves running, walking her dog, hiking, and biking. She also enjoys relaxing with a good book.

Who Inspired Her?

Her favorite teacher was her own 5th Grade teacher! That teacher gave her old teacher manuals so she could “play school” at home. This experience helped inspire her to become a teacher.

What Does She Love About Teaching?

Mrs. Swenson loves getting to know her students and helping them reach their highest potential. She also enjoys that every day is different and exciting.

Did You Know?

Mrs. Swenson is also the 5th Grade camp coordinator! Planning the Camp Whitcomb field trip is a big job, and it creates memories students will never forget.

Mrs. Swenson has made a lasting impact on Horizon through her dedication, kindness, and love for teaching. Whether she is helping students solve a tough math problem, encouraging them during a run, or planning an unforgettable camp experience, she always gives her best. She inspires students to work hard, believe in themselves, and try new things. Thank you, Mrs. Swenson, for everything you have done. You have made a difference that students will carry with them for years to come!
