3D Printing: Turning Ideas Into Reality!

From designs to real objects at Horizon

Written by  Amelia B., Riley B., and Mia C.

Have you ever wondered how a machine can create real objects from an idea? That’s exactly what a 3D printer does! A 3D printer uses a material called filament (a thin plastic strand) and builds objects layer by layer until the design is complete.

First, students design and create using software compatible with the 3D printer. Then, the printer is prepped for printing. Next, the filament is fed into the machine. Then, you choose a design on the printer’s screen. The printer moves back and forth, stacking thin layers to create the object.

3D printers can create all kinds of things, like toys, fidgets, tools, and even prosthetic limbs for people or animals. Some places are even using large 3D printers to build houses quickly. 3D printing is a fast and creative way to make things. Whether you’re designing a gift or solving a problem, it helps turn ideas into real objects.

Students at Horizon have been using our 3D printer in creative ways. Before printing, they learn to design using Tinkercad, a program that turns their ideas into printable files. Students have created bookmarks, Mother’s Day planter sticks, imaginary animals, and National Park medallions.

One exciting project included designing custom cookie cutters during a math and cooking activity. Students even worked with high school culinary students to test their designs.

3D printing shows that with creativity and technology, the possibilities are almost endless. Even better, there are sixteen 3D printers at ASA Clark Middle School! If you haven’t tried designing and printing yet, you’ll have the chance to explore it next year.
