How Can You Solve Problems at Recess? Imagine you are playing at recess and you see a problem start. What should you do? First, think about the Tree of Choices. Is it a small problem or a big problem? If it is a small problem, try to solve it on your own by talking calmly, using kind words, taking deep breaths, or walking it out until you feel ready to play again. On November 5th, we interviewed Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Horvat about our new school motto, "Rowing Together, Every Learner, Every Day." We asked them some questions, and their answers helped us understand why this motto is so important. The idea for the motto began over the summer, when a group of teachers and administrators attended a presentation. This year, our guidance teacher, Mrs. Jansen-Koch, introduced an idea called Calming Corners. These are safe spaces in every classroom where students can go anytime they feel upset, frustrated, or need a break. Calming Corners give students a chance to reset and return to learning at their best. A Calming Corner is a space where students can take a break while still staying connected to what’s happening in class. Mrs. Jansen-Koch explained that classrooms have them because w
