State Bound - A "Different Year" for the Pewaukee Varsity Dance Team
Pewaukee, WI – On February 1st, The Pewaukee Dance Team, coached by Lisa Gerdman and Miranda Kozlik, will be heading to La Crosse, WI to compete at the WACPC State Dance Competition. This past weekend, the girls qualified for State at Regionals placing 2nd in Jazz and 3rd in Hip Hop. The honor of competing at State has quickly become the norm for the Varsity team as this marks their 12th consecutive year qualifying.
When asked what makes this year different from previous years, Anna Cottrill, Senior Captain of the dance team, expressed that the routines they are bringing are unique to any other team in Pewaukee Dance history. “We are lucky enough to have a very technically trained group of dancers this year, allowing us to compete Jazz—a genre we have never before competed with past teams—alongside our Hip Hop routine as well”, said Cottrill. The girls have attended five competitions this season, placing 2nd or higher in Jazz at all of them.
Over the years, the Pewaukee Varsity Dance Team has brought home a total of 6 State Championship titles under both categories of “Division 2 Hip Hop” and “Division 3 Pom” but never under the category of “Division 2 Jazz”. The routine consists of multiple tricks, acrobatic team headsprings, and technical turns. The routine is accompanied by a remake version of the 80’s song “Everybody Wants To Rule the World” by Tears for Fears.
The team also qualified to compete their Hip Hop routine at the WACPC State Dance Competition this weekend. “The Pewaukee Dance Team has become known for its Hip Hop performances,” Hailey Johnson, a Senior Captain explained. “We are even more proud of this because we are one of a few teams in the State that still choreographs their own routines instead of hiring outside choreographers.”
The team is ecstatic to represent their school at a State level this weekend, capping off their 9 month season. “If we place at State, I would be extremely proud,” Maddie Heimsch, Senior Captain, said. “But I would be even more proud if we all could look back on our performances after the fact, knowing we gave it our best run together.”
